TRANSITIONS

DE / COTU Berlin, 2021

“Transitions” explores hybrid locations at the intersection of urban life and infrastructure, with a focus on existing structures.

During the mass mobilization efforts of 1960s West Berlin, bus terminals were built to enable non-motorized citizens to participate in the modern flow of traffic. However, with the reintroduction of the Subway, many bus lines were discontinued for economic reasons. Today, these terminals have been dismantled, left vacant, or repurposed.

The design concept aims to reactivate and reinterpret the unused spaces of the Rathenauplatz bus terminal through a careful process of adding and removing specific architectural elements. By shifting its purpose from a purely transit-oriented structure to a flexible cultural and exhibition space, the building is reimagined within a new context, offering room for diverse and creative appropriation.
